APPLICATION NOTES

Selecting phosphating treatment for steel wire drawing

What to check when matching a phosphate coating to steel grade, drawing reduction and soap lubrication.

Start with the drawing operation

A phosphate conversion coating provides a carrier for subsequent soap-based lubrication. Selection should consider steel grade, incoming surface condition, drawing reduction, number of passes and lubricant system. A wire-drawing grade should be evaluated against actual drawing results.

Assess the complete pretreatment sequence

Review degreasing, oxide removal, rinsing and activation before assessing the phosphate bath. Uneven preparation can affect coverage. The METOX catalogue recommends checking phosphate coverage, lubricant retention, drawn surface quality and die condition.

Control the bath using the matched technical data

Use the approved technical data sheet for bath preparation and control parameters. Replenishment should follow analysis and the matched product system. Confirm MTX-PH-107 compatibility before using it with a selected phosphating grade.

What to include in an enquiry

Provide steel grade, wire diameters before and after drawing, line type, existing pretreatment, lubricant, bath capacity and the issue you need to address. These details support product selection and a representative trial.

Based on the METOX product catalogue. These selection notes do not replace the current product TDS, SDS or equipment procedures.
